How glitch text actually works

Zalgo text isn't an image or a font — it's a stack. Unicode includes 'combining marks': accent characters designed to sit above, below or through the letter before them, so languages can build characters like é or ñ. Crucially, there's no technical limit on how many you can stack on one letter.

Glitch text abuses that generosity. Pile dozens of combining marks onto each character and they spill far above and below the line, creating the corrupted look. Every mark is a legitimate Unicode character, which is why it survives copy-paste into apps that strip normal formatting — the chaos is in the text itself.

Where it works and where it breaks

Glitch text is the most fragile of the text styles, by design:

  • Discord: works well and is where Zalgo is most at home — though many servers have bots that auto-delete it as spam.
  • Instagram and X: usually renders, but heavy intensity may get visually clipped by the app's line height.
  • Gaming names: often blocked — most games reject combining marks outright to prevent exactly this.
  • Keep intensity low for anything you want people to actually read. High intensity is a visual effect, not communication.

Use it kindly

One genuine warning. Because the marks overflow their line, heavy glitch text can overlap and obscure text around it, which is why it's often treated as spam — many Discord servers and forums ban it outright, and mass-posting it can get you muted or removed.

It's also genuinely hostile to screen readers: a blind user's software will attempt to announce every stacked combining mark, turning one word into a torrent of noise. Use glitch text for aesthetic effect in your own name or a one-off post — not for anything anyone needs to read, and not to flood a channel.

Frequently asked questions

›What is Zalgo or glitch text?

Text corrupted by stacking dozens of Unicode combining marks — accent characters meant to sit above and below letters — onto every character. They overflow the line and create the dripping, glitched look. It's real text, so it copies and pastes anywhere.

›How do I make glitch text?

Type your text above and drag the intensity slider — from lightly distorted to fully cursed — then tap to copy. Paste it into Discord, Instagram or anywhere that accepts text.

›Why does glitch text get deleted on Discord?

Many servers run bots that treat Zalgo as spam, because heavy glitch text overflows its line and disrupts the readability of the channel around it. Some servers ban it entirely — check the rules before posting.

›Does glitch text work in game names?

Usually not. Most games reject Unicode combining marks specifically to prevent Zalgo names from breaking their interface. Our Stylish Text Generator has styles far more likely to be accepted by games.

›Is glitch text bad for accessibility?

Yes, genuinely. Screen readers try to announce every stacked combining mark, turning a single word into a flood of noise for blind users. Keep it to short aesthetic flourishes and never use it for content people need to read.
