Salary CalculatorSalary Calculator — CTC to In-Hand, Honestly Explained

About Salary Calculator

The number in your offer letter is not the number that reaches your bank account. Enter your CTC and this calculator shows your estimated monthly in-hand after employer PF, employee PF, professional tax and income tax (new regime, FY 2026-27) — with the full deduction trail visible, so you know exactly where each rupee goes.

Why in-hand is so much less than CTC

CTC — Cost To Company — is what employing you costs, not what you get paid. It bundles the employer's PF contribution (money that goes to your retirement account, not your bank), sometimes gratuity provisions and insurance premiums, and occasionally variable pay you may or may not receive. A ₹12 lakh CTC translates to roughly ₹90,000 per month in hand, not ₹1 lakh — and that's in a good year for taxpayers: since the ₹12 lakh rebate, most of that gap is PF, not tax.

The deduction chain works like this: CTC minus employer PF gives your gross salary; from gross, your own PF contribution (12% of basic), professional tax (about ₹200/month in most states) and income-tax TDS are deducted monthly. What remains is in-hand.

The basic-salary lever most people ignore

Nearly every deduction keys off your basic salary — both PF contributions are 12% of basic, gratuity accrues on basic, and HRA is a percentage of basic. Companies typically set basic at 40–50% of CTC. A higher basic means more forced retirement savings and lower monthly in-hand; a lower basic means the reverse.

Neither is 'better' universally: high-basic structures build wealth automatically (PF earns tax-free, currently 8.25% interest), while low-basic structures suit those who need cash flow now or invest the difference deliberately. When comparing two offers with equal CTC, always compare the basic — the offers are not equal.

What this estimate assumes — read before trusting it

Every company structures CTC differently, so this calculator states its assumptions instead of hiding them:

  • Employer PF (12% of basic) is included inside your CTC — the most common structure.
  • Tax is computed under the new regime with the ₹75,000 standard deduction — the default for most salaried taxpayers since FY 2023-24. If you claim heavy old-regime deductions (HRA, home loan), your tax may be lower; check our Old vs New Regime tool.
  • Professional tax of ₹200/month — it varies slightly by state (capped at ₹2,500/year; a few states charge none).
  • No gratuity provision, variable pay, ESOPs or insurance premiums inside CTC. If your offer includes these, subtract them from CTC first for a truer estimate.

Frequently asked questions

›What is the in-hand salary for a ₹12 lakh CTC?

About ₹90,000 per month under the new tax regime (FY 2026-27), assuming a standard structure — basic at 40% of CTC, employer PF inside CTC, no variable pay. Income tax is zero at this level thanks to the ₹12 lakh rebate; the gap between CTC and in-hand is mostly PF. Enter your exact numbers above for a personalised breakdown.

›Why is my in-hand salary less than CTC divided by 12?

Because CTC includes money that never reaches your account monthly: the employer's PF contribution, and often gratuity or insurance. Then your own PF, professional tax and income-tax TDS are deducted from what's left. The calculator shows this full chain line by line.

›Is employer PF part of CTC?

In most Indian offers, yes — the employer's 12%-of-basic PF contribution is counted inside the CTC figure. It's your money, but it goes to your EPF account for retirement, not your bank account. Some offers exclude it; check your offer letter's annexure.

›What is professional tax and why is it deducted?

A small state-government tax on employment, deducted monthly by your employer — typically ₹200/month, capped at ₹2,500 per year. Rates vary by state, and a few states (like Delhi) don't levy it at all. It's deductible from taxable income under the old regime.

›Does this calculator use the old or new tax regime?

The new regime (FY 2026-27 slabs with the ₹75,000 standard deduction and ₹12 lakh rebate), which is the default and best for most salaried people. If you claim large HRA or home-loan deductions, run our Old vs New Tax Regime comparison to see if the old regime beats it.

›How can I increase my in-hand salary without changing jobs?

Legitimate levers: pick the right tax regime (worth up to ₹1 lakh+ a year), restructure salary components where your employer allows flexible benefit plans (fuel, meal cards, NPS via 80CCD(2) which is deductible even in the new regime), and submit investment proofs on time so TDS isn't over-deducted.
